This song is a direct result of my friendship and mentoring relationship with one of the next generation’s worship leaders and songwriters, Matt Unruh. I met Matt while I was teaching a worship songwriting course at our local Bible school, Columbia Bible College, and was immediately struck with his genuine calling to worship ministry. We connected through our deep passion for ‘true truth’ and our longing to see the church express truth in our worship gatherings.
Matt’s generation writes slightly differently than mine, just as I write differently than those before me. I played him the beginning of this song; he liked the chorus but thought the verses needed help -- they did! He took them in a different melodic direction than I would have, but it was a change for the better. We deliberately tried to fashion the arrangement into a mix of old and new with vibrant contemporary energy, while featuring the choir and the string section to give the piece a sense of historical grounding.
This song was inspired by Nehemiah 4:9 where the Levites called the people to “stand up and praise the One who is from everlasting to everlasting.” When we get caught up in the way our culture looks at life, we need to re-engage ourselves in the worship of God, proclaiming His unchanging character and steadfast word in the midst of a constantly shifting culture.
Psalm 90:2 “. . . from everlasting to everlasting you are God”
Nehemiah 9:5 And the Levites . . . said: "Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting." |
