Story of the "You
Shine" recording:
"You Shine" is my first worship recording;
it almost sounds strange to say after being involved
in recordings for almost 15 years. Some people were
surprised that I would do my first recording live in
Dublin. Several people stopped and asked me, "Why
Dublin?" Here's a brief glimpse into the journey
that led me to this point and the story behind this
recording.
Several years ago, when I was living in England (the
time when I produced "Hungry"and "Come,
Now is the Time"), I had the privilege of spending
a few weekends in Dublin, teaching on leading worship
and writing worship songs with a gathering of Irish
worship leaders and songwriters. Doing that was a fulfillment
of a dream and several words to serve the Irish church,
and I thought my connection with the Irish church may
be over when we moved back to Canada in the summer of
99. After resigning from Vineyard Music in the autumn
of 2000 (not because things were going poorly, but because
I felt led to serve the broader church), I sensed I
was to wait for God to lead me to the right group of
people to partner with. Several months into this time
I received a phone call from Chris Thomason at Integrity.
After sharing our stories, vision and heart, we both
sensed God's leading toward a partnership. We felt that
my first recording should be a live one, so we begin
initial discussions of where to do it. We were looking
at several different locations in North America, including
my hometown of Abbotsford where there is a significant
move of unity happening in the churches. One night,
I had a dream. I'm not the type of person that gets
a lot of dreams, but this night in my dream I walked
up to Chris Thomason and said this: "I know where
my live recording should happen...Dublin, Ireland!"
A few days later, Chris called, and when the subject
of "where"came up I shared the dream that
he was in. He was silent for a moment, and then said,
"we have been waiting for the right timing and
the right person to do a recording there!" I was
amazed and grateful to have God’s direction!!!
I then scheduled myself a flight on Sep 12th, 2001 to
travel to Dublin from Vancouver and begin preparations
there. Of course there were no planes flying on that
date, so I wasn’t able to go over then, but I
did manage to get over in December to do preparation
work. There were many challenges along the way, but
we continued to feel that Dublin was the right location
for this "evening of worship" that was to
be recorded, and looking back now, all of us on the
team have no regrets about being in Dublin!!
I had the amazing privilege of gathering some of my
best friends and favourite musicians to do this recording
with me. Brian Thiessen has been a friend since early
childhood and has been playing electric guitars with
me since we formed our first band in high school. Philip
Janz, who co-produces and plays all the keyboards, sings
backing vocals and programs all the drum loops has worked
together with me since 95 and we have become very close
friends. Daphne Rademaker, who adds her powerful, yet
beautifully fragile voice, has been a dear friend since
1985 when we met her on the first day we walked into
the Langley Vineyard. The rhythm section is held down
by Calum Rees on drums and Matt Weeks on bass; both
of them played on "Hungry" under my direction
and they are great musicians and passionate worshippers
to boot! (Maybe I shouldn’t use the word "boot"
in the context of anything other than the trunk of a
car, since Matt and Calum are British...wouldn't communication
be boring and predictable if we all used the same ‘English’
words for the same things!) It was a special treat to
have James Isaacs join us from L.A. He is a gifted and
sensitive oboe player who also plays all the pennywhistles
and added the touch of "historical class"and
"gentle artistry" to the recording. I especially
love the way the oboe, representing historical music,
and the electric guitar, representing the modern, interact
in "Psalm 13," which is one of my personal
favourites on the CD. Locally in Dublin, Ann Trainor
did an amazing job of drawing in some wonderful local
singers for the choir, plus introducing us to Kim McKevitt,
a 19 year old young woman from Dublin who sings like
an angel in Gaelic.
We recorded live on February 16, 2002, beginning the
evening this way: I stepped to the front steps of the
church and lit a match in the darkness. Then I lit a
single candle held by Jeffrey Flynn, a boy chorister
from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. As Jeffrey
concluded the chorus of "You Shine" and the
band began to play, we began to light candles all around
the balcony of the old stone church we were worshipping
in, and the candles continued to burn throughout the
entire evening. The night seemed like "the eye
of the storm" for me: full of peace and God's presence
while the time before and since has been full of challenges.
After doing our overdubs with the Irish musicians and
the Irish singers in Dublin, Philip and I returned home
to Canada, where we finished our overdubs and mixed
the album at Philip's studio (Hi Tyme Studios) in Mission,
B.C. One of the things I love about working on the Protools
system is the instant recall, so Philip was able to
mix for a couple of weeks and then we could review the
mixes and make minor changes as needed. Chris Thomason
& Steve Merkel came up from Integrity in Alabama
to review the mixes with us, and make final suggestions,
which was really helpful!! It's been wonderful working
with Steve & Chris; they are true artists who have
a passion for excellence and ministry!
It was also an incredible privilege to have the CD mastered
in New York at Sony Music Studios by Vlado Meller, one
of the pioneers of modern mastering and one of the world's
most sought-after mastering engineers. (Two recent projects
he mastered were "Josh Groban" and "Celine
Dion - A New Day Has Come.") This came about due
to Integrity's partnership with Sony, which has also
led to my CD being released into the secular market
by Sony Epic. I do believe we live in a time when people's
hunger for spiritual things is increasing, and there
is a much greater openness to worship music, music that
is written for an "Audience of One."
I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to
all of you who made the effort to purchase "You
Shine," and who by doing so support me in my love
and calling to write and record worship music. For some
of you that have followed my music from the early days
of "Faithful One" and "Refiner's Fire,"
thanks for your patience in waiting for this. For my
new friends who are just being introduced to my music,
thanks for coming along!! I truly hope that as you listen
to this project, you will be able to enter into worship,
and that through the storms of uncertainty, the times
of pain and the seasons of blessing, you will be able
to love the One who made you!!
In the Father’s love,
Brian Doerksen
