Story of the "Hungry"
recording :
My final project while I was living in England, this
recording is packed with emotion and memories for me.
The night itself when we recorded in SW London in February
1999 was very special. The place was totally "heaving"
with people (in case you need translation that's a British
phrase for "jammed to the rafters") and the
sense of God's presence and favour was very near.
The "Hungry" recording was a total team effort,
but one of the names most people connect with this recording
is Kathryn Scott. I won't forget meeting Kathryn for
the first time. Actually it wasn't in person, but via
video. As part of my training of Vineyard worship leaders,
I had the churches in the British Isles video their
Sunday morning worship times and send me the tapes so
I could get a sense of what was happening to help me
focus my training efforts. One of the tapes was from
the Glasgow, Scotland Vineyard, where Alan and Kathryn
Scott, a young married couple, were living at the time.
As soon as I heard and saw Kathryn leading worship (and
I can assure you that the quality of the video was "low-fi"
all the way!) I knew she had a call to lead worship.
What I didn't know at the time was how much some of
her songs would move me and other people around the
world. I had considered having Kathryn involved in our
first UK Vineyard recording ("Come, Now is the
Time") a year earlier, but the timing didn't seem
right, and she was still re-writing a song she ended
up calling "Hungry." Of course, the "Hungry"
recording includes many others beyond Kathryn that by
this point were very dear friends to me. Brenton Brown
included one of his new songs, "Humble King"
(If you ever get the chance, ask Brenton to tell you
about how I drove him nuts getting him to do a few lyrical
revisions on that one). The "sleeper" song
on this recording was "Be the Centre." When
the song panel that helped choose songs for the project
first heard the demo, the whole group almost unanimously
said "Not a great song; it won't work congregationally."
Now there have been numerous times where I have missed
songs initially too (like "Holy & Anointed
One") but this time, I was sure that this song
would work great. It's turned out to be a core song
in my repertoire as a worship leader, and that story
is being repeated in many places. I love the new recording
that Vineyard Music India did of it, and you get a sense
of the way this song can adapt to many cultures.
I believe, at this point, that this recording has turned
out to be Vineyard Music's best-selling recording, and
for that I am so grateful to God, and to the friends
who joined together in worship, especially John &
Eleanor Mumford and the other pastoral leaders of the
Vineyard in the UK & Ireland.
