Story of the "Changed
by Your Glory" recording:
October 1 1989. That date changed more things about
my work and ministry life than almost any other day.
Andy Park, who had been the worship pastor of our church
since it's planting in 85, had just announced his departure
to go and pastor a church. I had become the full time
worship pastor at the age of 23!! We had been discussing
doing a simple recording of the songs we were writing
for our church, and so I invited Andy to come back for
a Sunday evening of worship that we would record. We
gathered in the afternoon to pray and I had an experience
that is unique in my life and one I will never forget.
As we were praying and giving the project over to God,
I was struck by something that knocked me to the ground.
(Just so you know I am fairly conservative when it comes
to these sort of things and have been at several meetings
where everyone else gets "slain in the Spirit"
and I am the lone one standing). When I collapsed this
intense electrical type current starting coursing through
my body. At one point it got so intense I thought "I'm
going to die . . . God has come to kill before we do
this recording because I am a sinner!!" However,
after I realized that I was still alive, I understood
that the power was not there to kill me or judge me,
but love me!!!! The "Refiner's Fire" is love.
Yes our God is a consuming fire . . . but He is Love!!!!
I eventually got up and we had a wonderful evening!!
It turns out that this project, which we originally
thought was just for our church, started spreading via
word of mouth and many of the songs started spreading
too. This was the album that introduced a few of my
first songs like "Refiner's Fire," "Faithful
One" and "I Lift my Eyes up" to the church.
I'm also grateful that many of the friends we made
during that season of our life are still dear friends,
including Gary & Joy Best, who were our pastors
for years along with Doug & Suzie Watts.
